Andreu Alfaro

Valencia, 1929 – Valencia, 2012

Andreu Alfaro (1929–2012) was a Spanish sculptor and one of the most important figures in contemporary sculpture, widely regarded as a precursor of minimalism in Spain. Born in Valencia and self-taught, he began his artistic career in the late 1950s with works influenced by Constructivism. From the outset, he developed a distinctive visual language based on geometry, rhythm, and the relationship between line, volume, and space, working primarily with industrial materials such as steel and aluminum.

In 1958, he joined the ParpallĂł Group, marking the beginning of his international projection. He participated in major art fairs and exhibitions across Europe and the United States and took part in the Venice Biennale in 1960 and 1995. His work is characterized by a synthetic approach to form and by the conviction that sculpture should recover its public and commemorative dimension, establishing a constant dialogue with architectural and urban space.

Particularly noteworthy are his more than eighty monumental sculptures conceived for public spaces in cities throughout Spain, Germany, and the United States, where his works function as collective landmarks. Throughout his career, Alfaro received numerous awards, including the National Prize for the Visual Arts (1981), the Creu de Sant Jordi (1982), and the Prize for Urbanism, Architecture, and Public Works (1991), consolidating his legacy as one of the most significant Spanish sculptors of the twentieth century.
