Andrei Roiter
Moscow (Russia), 1962
Andrei Roiter is a Russian artist whose work reflects a life shaped by exile, emigration, and the search for identity. Born in the Soviet Union, he began painting at a young age despite his familyâs opposition, developing his practice clandestinely in Moscow. He worked as a night guard in an abandoned kindergarten, which he and other artists transformed into the creative collective Kindergarden. Roiter continued to experiment there until 1988, when he moved to Amsterdam, establishing a studio also in New York.
Roiterâs work is deeply autobiographical, exploring themes of solitude, fragility, and a sense of not belonging anywhere. His paintings and sculptures investigate memory and personal history, creating hidden and metaphysical spaces. Influences from artists such as Lucio Fontana and Gordon Matta-Clark are evident in his interest in spatial limits and openings that reveal what lies beyond the canvas.
Formally, his work is defined by technical mastery and a restrained palette of greens, sepias, reds, and browns, where darkness and melancholy coexist with delicate luminosity. The objects and figures he depicts function as symbols of the human condition, transforming his experiences of displacement and exile into a visual language that explores identity, memory, and belongingâthemes that permeate all of his work.
