Ariel Cabrera
Camagüey (Cuba), 1982
Ariel Cabrera is a Cuban artist who lives and works in New Jersey, United States. He studied Fine Arts at the Academy of Camagüey and later graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, Cuba, one of the most influential institutions in the development of contemporary Cuban art.
Since 2014, he has developed a solid international career, participating in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the Americas and Europe. His work is included in important private collections in Cuba, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Germany, and Italy, reflecting the growing recognition of his practice.
Cabrera’s painting is characterized by a meticulous figurative approach in which images from different historical periods are combined in a collage-like manner. Rather than using physical cutouts, these juxtapositions are constructed through layers of brushwork that seamlessly integrate historical, cultural, and symbolic references within a single scene. Cuba occupies a central place in his work, not only as a physical territory but as a historical and symbolic space through which the artist examines memory, identity, and narratives of power, challenging linear conceptions of history from a contemporary perspective.
