Juan Gopar

Lanzarote, (Spain), 1958

Juan Gopar is an artist who sculpts, paints, and draws. He explores his art within an insular space, teeming with ships and beaches. Some of his works, crafted from debris reclaimed from the sea, offer an eco-critical perspective, emphasizing the precarious nature of our existence. The remnants he employs in his creations imbue them with a sense of hope.

These pieces not only showcase Gopar’s dedication to the art, culture, and history of the islands but also delve into the unique intersection between his artistic vision and the objects discovered along the shores, swept in by ocean currents. The juxtaposition within Gopar’s work, between painting and these found objects, unveils themes of growth, shipwrecks, and catastrophes.

Gopar boasts an extensive career, with both solo and group exhibitions held in Spain and abroad. His works are prominently featured in permanent collections such as La Caixa in Barcelona, the Genty Latimer collection in London, the Atlantic Center for Modern Art (CAAM) in Gran Canaria, Achenbach Art Consulting in Dusseldorf, and Artium in Vitoria.
