TEMPORAL EXHIBITION

Fragments of Nature

Juan Gopar fotografía

Juan Gopar, Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Spain), 1958

The renowned Canary Island artist Juan Gopar is known for his personal connection to nature and his ability to capture its essence in abstract forms. In this exhibition, he presents three series of paintings on paper that reflect his artistic sensitivity and conceptual exploration. These works reflect his dedication to the art, culture and history of the islands.

In this exhibition, the artist immerses us in his creative universe through a visual narrative centered around lichens, textures, and the chromatics that define his work. Each series represents an introspective journey that dialogues with the elements of nature from multiple perspectives.

Gopar has an extensive career with solo and group exhibitions in Spain and abroad. His works are part of permanent collections such as La Caixa in Barcelona, Genty Latimer collection in London, the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) in Gran Canaria, Achenbach Art Consulting in Dusseldorf, or Artium in Vitoria.

Lichen

The first series, titled Lichen, consists of a total of 8 paintings on paper measuring 24 x 50 cm. These works not only explore the delicacy and resilience of lichens, recurring elements in Juan Gopar’s artistic language, but also address the challenge they represent for his artistic practice.

For the artist, lichens are not only a motif but a creative problem: how to represent something that lacks a coherent form? How to translate the experience of walking on the volcano into art? Through a rich and detailed color palette, Gopar faces these questions, transforming each piece into an abstraction that reflects both the natural environment and the cycles of life and regeneration that lichens symbolize.

In this series, the artistic process becomes a dialogue between the concrete and the ethereal, an attempt to capture the essence of the indefinable and give form to the inherent chaos of volcanic nature.

Notebook of Shore Walks

The second series, consisting of 6 works on paper measuring 24 x 50 cm, focuses on a play of contrasts and harmonies. Through overlapping layers of color and texture, Gopar creates compositions that suggest an internal dialogue, a fragmented conversation between the abstract and the concrete.

In these works, the artist invites us to explore his Notebook of Shore Walks, where puddles of water, shaped by tides and nestled among the rocks, become protagonists. For Gopar, these small fragments of the world contain all the mysteries: in them, light, shapes, and colors condense an emotion, an instant that transcends the everyday to become something universal.

With this series, the artist moves away from direct reference to nature to explore a more introspective language, where gesture and stain acquire a unique protagonism. Each piece seems to narrate a distinct episode from his walks, while simultaneously integrating into the overall discourse of the series, revealing truths that only painting can capture.

Encounters

The final series, titled Encounters, consists of 4 paintings on paper (35.5 x 50 cm). In these works, Juan Gopar delves into the essence of painting as an act of discovery and exploration. For the artist, painting does not seek, it finds. It is a process that moves away from predefined intentions, programs, or styles, and embraces risk, chance, and an openness to the unknown.

With a loose and expressive stroke, these pieces evoke imaginary landscapes that vibrate between the earthly and the ethereal. Each work is constructed from action and emotion, discovering what was hidden to give it form and make it visible.

The “Encounters” series presents itself as a poetic culmination of the journey begun in the previous series. It is a meaningful closure, resonating with the very essence of Gopar’s art: the pure emotion of discovery and the unbreakable connection between the human being and their environment.

With this exhibition, Juan Gopar invites us to reflect on the profound connections between art, nature, and the human experience. Through his three series, the artist transforms the ordinary into something transcendent. Each work is a testimony of his ability to capture the ephemeral and the ineffable, translating the natural world into a visual language that invites the viewer to look beyond the obvious. From volcanic lichens to tide-shaped puddles, and finally, unexpected encounters with the unknown, Gopar builds a universe where painting becomes a means of discovery and emotion. His art has an evocative power in which, like nature itself, “it reveals universal truths hidden in the smallest details”.
